Silver Hair FTW

After many agonizing moments through researching, I have found a solution to create Silver Hair.

Like I'm literally humming and smiling as I am typing up this post ^___^

For the past few weeks, my auntie requested me to dye her hair silver since she wanted it to blend in with her grays. I planned to go silver myself so I began searching and searching for many solutions on  how to easily achieve silver hair.

Crazy Colour and Directions did sell silver hair dye, however the application was quite... was it? Well, not trusting.

The way to achieve the "silver" hair is to lighten your hair to a pale yellow and to apply onto damp hair. Which in I an easily say, apply onto damp hair is not nice. When your hair is bleached and damaged, it goes gummy and stretchy when damp therefore causing more damage if not treated carefully. The only way to handle hair is if it's completely wet or dry.

I have tried Directions before onto my ash hair, and it only turned my tips silvery. The rest was still ash blonde which didn't make much difference. Although it is a good toner.

Anyways, back to researching, I was certain these method of dyes would not work well onto my aunty's hair because:

A: Her hair has been dyed previously into a dark colour.

B: Her hair is really long and thick, I wasn't going to spend a lot on something which claims to turn hair silver.

Here's a photo of her current hair colour:

The sort of silver she wanted, was dark grey, like this:

Now this was a challenge for me so I was going to give it my all to make this work.

Few more days, I began to lose hope because of the advice I turned to was to use those crazy colour, directions or some toners which was crazy expensive. I began to watch youtube videos as well to see if they have any other but they all pretty much said the same thing :/

Just as I was about to close the tab, a certain thumbnail on youtube caught my eye, his name - Leigh Dorei. I watched his video and I was quite impressed on how he achieved his silver hair, here's his video:

The sort of stuff he used was proper hair dresser dyes, y'know the sort of stuff that comes in tubes. Luckily, I lived nearby Sally's which had a whole self full of these dyes. Leigh pretty much explains what sort of dyes to use but I might as well list mine just incase:

  • Ion Permanent Creme Hair Colour 9.1
  • Ion Permanent Creme Hair Colour 1.10
  • Ion Creme Developer 6% 20 vol
The dye itself cost under £10 each depending which brand you buy (there was wella, koleston, rusk etc) but for now I stuck with the cheaper product, Ion.

Anyways, here are the ends results on my aunty's hair:

How it's done:

  1. First Bleach session (150ml of 30vol + 50g of Powder Bleach) 60 mins. Black > Red/Orange.
  2. Second Bleach session (150ml of 30vol + 50g of Powder Bleach) 60 mins Red/Orange > Pale Orange/Yellow Gold
  3. Ran out of powder bleach so I used Garnier Nutrisse Pre-Lightener Crème as an alternative. 60 mins. Pale orange/ yellow gold > some pale orange/ Yellow
Yeah most of her hair remained orange from the previous dye so it was really stubborn ;/ I would advice anyone to use a colour stripped first before bleaching or re-dying.

After the 3rd session, I bite the bullet and tried the method that Leigh did:

For long hair:

  • 200 ml of 20vol Creme Developer
  • 100 ml of 9.1
  • Around 15 ml of 1.10

And volia, that's the results! Some hair turned dark silver whilst the rest turned ash blonde. I was really, really impressed on how much this actually works, It's not the gun metal silver she wanted but she was mega pleased with it. All she needed to do is to use purple shampoo to tone ^__^

So yeah, was pleases with the result, and I began to do the same to my hair after my hair cut.

Also a shout out to Jackie from JL London for cutting my hair. She specializes in cutting short hair ^.^

Before:

As you can see, some of my blonde hair was darker than the others, and I had some blonde on the short hair. Before I dyed it, I use 10vol creme developer with powder bleach to even it more.

Okay so for the dye I did:

  • 50 ml of 20vol Creme Developer
  • 25 ml of 9.1
  • About an inch length of 1.10 (pretty much the same amount that Leigh used)
After applying the mixed dye onto my bleached hair, I mixed in more blue black for the rest of shaven hair (so my hair doesn't look odd).

The results after 30 mins:

It doesn't show on camera but my hair is quite brassy, but no fear, the purple shampoo will tone this to make it appear more ashy. My hair has a bit of a blue tint to it but overall I am really happy with the end results ^___^

So silver hair = win!
